Jagielka: 'Arrogant' referee mocked my defending

The Everton captain hit out at the officials following his side's League Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City, questioning the hosts's second goal

Phil Jagielka has criticised referee Martin Atkinson for his performance in Everton's 3-1 League Cup semi-final defeat against Manchester City, labelling the official "arrogant".

Everton were leading 3-2 on aggregate at the Etihad Stadium when Raheem Sterling set up Kevin De Bruyne to score when the ball appeared to have gone out for a goal kick.

Jagielka attempted to speak to Atkinson about the goal but suggested that the official dismissed his claims and even mocked his performance.

"He told me my defending was brilliant," the England international said.

"It's difficult when things start going the wrong way and they [the referees] become a little bit arrogant."

The Toffees captain believes television replays showed clearly that the goal should not have stood.

"The replays show it's not just an inch or so out," he added.
